TuneIn brings FM radio to Android devices

TuneIn brings FM radio to Android devices: "

For a while I’d forgotten about FM radio. With internet streaming services like Pandora, a seemingly endless array of internet radio stations, and MP3 players I went through a long spell where I didn’t turn on FM radio. Many of you probably had a similar experience. Why go with radio programmed for the masses when you can listen to exactly what you want? Apparently there is still a demand for FM services. I remember a buddy of mine going through pains to unlock the feature on his Nexus One. Many Android devices now come with an FM radio, but even if yours doesn’t you’re in luck. There’s an app that can have you riding the airwaves.

TuneIn doesn’t have the same allure as an FM radio, mainly because it runs over your data signal. In other words, it’s like another streaming internet radio app. The advantage, of course, is that it offers the familiarity of an FM dial, so you won’t be browsing streaming channels forever trying to find a station you like. You can just hit the Local Radio menu item and you’ll see all stations in your market, listed in order. It even has HD stations, so you might have even more available to you with TuneIn than you do in your car.

The advantage to TuneIn is that you can get out of market stations as well. The primary advantage is the ability to listen to stations you like in other markets. For instance, when I was younger and would go to the Jersey shore, I’d get Philadelphia stations. While New York is superior in nearly every way, Philly does have better rock radio stations. TuneIn allows me to listen to those stations instead of the lacking New York rock stations.

There are plenty of other features of TuneIn. You can set an alarm on a certain station, which makes the app also act as a clock radio. Podcasts are available from a number of outlets. TuneIn will also provide you with further recommendations based on the stations you listen to. If you have a RadioTime account you can enter your information to get your presets.

If your Android lacks an FM radio, or if you want to listen to out of market stations, you can get TuneIn for free in the Market.
