Androids Apps Alert #32: Tasks and Talking edition

Androids Apps Alert #32: Tasks and Talking edition: "

Every week, Androinica.com attempts to highlight the best Android Apps. Using tips from the #androidapps tag on Twitter and recommendations to @androinica, we try to find something you may have missed. This week’s theme is Tasks and Talking. Several of the apps featured in this week’s edition are about tasks or communicating in some form or another. Whether it’s getting things done, finding new ways to read your social stream, or changing your daily experience, these apps will be worth considering.

You may also notice there are no QR codes in this edition of Apps Alert. That’s because we have adopted AppBrain, which installs apps directly from the desktop or mobile browser (QR codes optional). This will be a much easier way for me to share links with you all. Find more information here.

my6sense

We’ve seen plenty of Android apps that attempt to aggregate social streams into one place; my6sense may be the best of the bunch. Available for members of Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, and RSS feeds, my6sense makes sense of all of the information most relevant to you. Users have the option of displaying items according to time, relevance, or source. There are some shortcomings in not being able to retweet with comment or like Facebook updates, but the experience is pretty good once you spend a few days using the app and enhancing the algorithm.

Remote Notifier

I was surprised to learn that not every Android user keeps his or her phone next to him at all times. Shocking, right? Well, those people can still keep up to date on their Mac or PC with Remote Notifier. Android notifications are re-routed from your phone to the desktop using WiFi/Bluetooth and Growl, Gnome, or the System tray depending on your OS. The app is limited because there’s only one-way sync, so these notifications will still be there when you return to the phone. However, it can be a good way to remain up-to-date if your phone is on silent or not next to you. (More info)

Taskos To-Do List

We’ve already shown that there are plenty of Android apps available to keep track of your daily tasks. Taskos is an app that can add those tasks via an easy-to access speech-to-text button. That’s of little value if your phone/keyboard already includes the feature, but if looking for a simple to-do list app, Taskos may fit the bill. Users can also add notes, categories, or importance, but you’ll have to manually type those in and there’s no online sync.

Simply Lockscreen

As for as lockscreen replacement apps go, Simply Lockscreen is one of the simplest (duh). However, that doesn’t mean the app isn’t customizable. Simply Lockscreen can provide shortcuts for changing the ringer; display calls, SMS, or email; show time, and display battery or date/time information. If you just want to customize your lockscreen without doing too much, consider this app.

Spider Man

No, that Spider Man, but you can still use a web shooter to swing from place to place. Spider Man is a game in which players tap the screen at certain points to land on a platform. Timing the jump just right will land closer to the center, which earns more points. Changes in wind speed and gravity will complicate matters, but players who develop good timing will be closer to fulfilling their childhood fantasies. In virtual form at least.

Automobile Magazine

Car enthusiasts may want to cruise over to the Android Market and download the official Android app from AutoMobile Magazine. In it, you’ll find news reports, long-form articles, rumors, videos, and photos of several vehicles. Automobile Magazine could benefit from an easier link to in-article photos, but it can also be a good way to keep up with automotive news.

Mobile Queue

We’re all still waiting on the official Netflix app to make its way to Android, but in the meantime, you can manage your queue from the phone. Mobile Queue makes it easy to monitor and adjust your disc or instant Netflix line-up. So the next time you go to the mailbox to drop off a disc, see what’s coming next and switch things around if something else catches your fancy.
