If you have rooted an Android phone in the past or have one in your possession now you have probably heard of the infamous CyanogenMod ROM. CyanogenMod is based off of the stock Android operating system allowing rooted Android users to get the latest versions of the software without having to wait for their carriers or deal with the bloatware that is now being included in most of their devices’ stock ROMs.
If you are an avid xda reader, ROM Manager user, or keep up with CyanogenMod then you may have seen that CyanogenMod 6 (CM6) has gotten a new round of release candidates available this weekend. CyanogenMod 6 is based on Android 2.2 FroYo. If you have any of the following, rooted devices:
- Nexus One
- Motorola Droid
- HTC EVO
- HTC Desire
- HTC Incredible
- HTC Hero (GSM/CDMA)
- HTC Dream
- HTC Magic
- HTC Aria
- MT3G Slide
you can head on over to the Cyanogen site or check out ROM Manager for the latest downloads.
I have been running CM6 on my rooted HTC Incredible for about 24 hours now and I have to say that it is almost ready for “prime-time”. There are small things that are buggy (lack of LED notifications and automatic brightness do not work) but nothing that, at least to me, can’t be lived with. Downloading and installing was a breeze, sync works, phone, WiFi, messaging, Bluetooth, camera and video camera, Flash 10.1, etc. are all a go. I would imagine after a couple weeks of testing and tweaking that we will see the “official” releases of CM6. Exciting times!
