The voice recognition on Android has been a real added benefit to the Android user. Today, Google announced at their press event they are taking their voice recognition one step further with the app Voice Actions for Android 2.2. Voice Actions will give Android users the ability to perform basic tasks with nothing but a tap of a button and what they want to accomplish.
For example, if you want to text your friend Andrew, you click on the voice button in the Google Search box and say,
“Send text to Andrew — I can’t believe that this app actually works”
That command right there will compose and send a text message to your friend Andrew. Pretty awesome. Not only can Voice Actions send text messages but can do all of the following:
- send text to [contact] [message]
- listen to [artist/song/album]
- call [business]
- call [contact]
- send email to [contact] [message]
- go to [website]
- note to self [note]
- navigate to [location/business name]
- directions to [location/business name]
- map of [location]
Google is apt to point out that this app has some constraints. First, you have to be using a phone that has Android 2.2 and as of now that includes EVO 4G, MOTO DROID 1 or 2, or the Nexus One. If you are rooted with 2.2 it looks like this app will work (just tried it on my rooted HTC Incredible). Next you need to download the Voice Search application for Android as well as the Google Search widget. The barcodes are below. With all those prerequisites in place you can start to use your Android as a voice enabled device.
